FAQ
What does Solas mean?
Very simply, Solas is the Irish word for light. Something we'd like to shine in the world literally, and metaphorically.
Is your founder really Irish?
Yes, born and raised in Ireland, Stephen moved to Michigan in his early twenties. Though his brogue accent may have faded just a bit, his powerfully red beard will leave you without any doubt as to his Celtic roots.
Are leprechauns real?
Stephen says in Ireland, it rains all year round, the grass is always green, rainbows are a common sight, people are friendlier than you can imagine, and leprechauns are 100% real.
What ingredients do you use in your candles?
We use 100% soy wax, no blends, additives, or dyes, phthalate free fragrance oils, and paper core cotton wicks. Our candles are free of any ingredients that would require California Prop 65 or EU Reach warnings.
Why soy wax?
- Unlike paraffin wax which is made from petroleum, soy wax is derived from a vegetable (soy beans) and can be grown and harvested right here in America which supports American farms and American workers.
- Soy wax is a renewable resource.
- Soy wax is biodegradable, contains no harsh or harmful chemicals, and can be cleaned up with soap and water.
- Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax so soy candles will burn slower and for longer.
Are your scents essential oils?
Consumer candles are rarely made with essential oils as they can be difficult to bond with the wax and often won't cast a quality scent. Some of our fragrances may contain essential oils but they're primarily synthetic blends. Our fragrance oils are safe and completely free of carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins, organ toxins and acute toxins. (Yes these things are allowed in consumer products - not ours)
Where do you get your containers?
Part of our mission is sustainability, another part is supporting American workers and industry. We source bottles through local restaurants and friends in the community. We go through a time consuming process to clean, de-label, and cut those bottles for use as candles. Additionally, we repurpose used containers we find at thrift stores, online marketplaces, and again through our friends in the community. Because those types of containers fluctuate in type and availability we also offer a consistent line of candles using new quality containers made here in the U.S.A. No imports and no dollar stores.
Where do you donate the 10% of sales?
Great question! There are a lot of people doing a lot of good in the world. Whether it's preventing human trafficking, feeding the hungry, rescuing our furry friends, protecting the environment, providing healthcare, support, education, and more. Every few months we want to select a different organization. Follow us on social media to see where we're donating 10% of your purchase.
What shipping carrier do you use?
We want to support and save our US Postal Service so we ship all our packages via USPS.
